A furnished home in Haywards Heath is a bigger decision than a few unwanted items. Beds, wardrobes, a kitchen full of crockery and a loft of boxes all have to go somewhere, and the order you tackle them in decides how smoothly the week goes.
This guide sets out how a full clearance works with Right Turn Removals, which covers Brighton, Hove and Sussex, and where the local rules limit the do-it-yourself and council routes. Mid Sussex District Council runs bin and bulky collections, while West Sussex County Council runs the recycling centres, so the rules come from two different bodies. We opened both councils' pages on 21 October 2026 and cite them below. If you are still deciding whether to clear the whole property, our wider guide to house clearance with Right Turn explains the full and part options.
From first message to a swept house
A clearance is seven steps in a fixed order, and the first three happen before anyone lifts a box.
Right Turn's published process is short, and it is worth knowing in advance so you can prepare for each step. Lewis runs every job personally, so the person you message is the person who comes to the house.
- Send the first message. Wide photos of each room, the postcode and any access notes, by WhatsApp, the contact form, phone or email.
- Lewis reviews the job. He looks at volume, access and parking, and at anything that needs a specialist route.
- You get a clear price. It is given before booking, so you know the figure before a date is set.
- You sort what stays. Mark anything you are keeping, selling or donating before the day.
- The clearance day. If the scope changes on the day, Lewis explains it and agrees any change before continuing.
- Reuse and recycling are considered. Where suitable, items are routed to reuse or recycling rather than straight to waste.
- The house is left swept. A waste receipt and the relevant waste record are available on request.

Photos matter more than a description. A wide shot of a kitchen shows cupboards, appliances and what is on the worktops in one frame, which is the information a price depends on. For a house with a garage or loft, add a photo of each. You can send them through the contact page or message directly on WhatsApp. Our services overview lists the other jobs that can be combined with a clearance, such as rubbish clearance from a garage or shed.
What a furnished home changes about the job
Furniture is bulky but easy to price; the cupboards, loft and garage are where the volume is usually underestimated.
A furnished three-bedroom house is not just the sofa and beds you can see from the front room. Look at the list of Right Turn's house clearance work and you will see how wide it runs: full or part clearance, probate and estate, end of tenancy, downsizing, heavily cluttered homes, and garage, loft and shed clearance. Each of those spaces adds volume, and each is often left until the end.
Three things shape the quote more than the number of rooms.
- Volume. How full the rooms, cupboards, loft and garage are, which is why photos of each space are asked for.
- Access. Stairs, narrow halls, a flat with a shared entrance, and how far the van must park from the door.
- Parking. A van that can stand outside the front door is a quicker job than one that has to carry items a long way.
If the clearance follows a death, our guide to probate house clearance in Sussex covers the order of decisions, and the checklist for clearing a parent's house is the practical room-by-room version. If you are clearing because you are moving, the moving house checklist shows where the clearance sits in the wider timetable, and Right Turn's home removals service can handle the move as well.
One thing to settle before you ask for any quote is what finish you want. Say whether you want furniture only, every cupboard emptied, or the whole property including the loft and shed. Our Peacehaven whole-property checklist goes through that scope conversation in detail, and the same room-by-room approach applies in Haywards Heath. The council route: Mid Sussex bulky waste collection
Mid Sussex District Council collects up to ten household items per booking for £27.50 for the first item and £18.00 for each one after, but it cannot take most of what is in a cleared house.
The council's bulky household waste page sets out how it works. You book online and pay by card, the council's contractor contacts you within five working days to arrange a day, and the whole process can take up to ten working days. Collections are on weekdays.
The charge is £27.50 for the first item and £18.00 for items two to ten. A full ten-item booking therefore comes to £27.50 plus nine items at £18.00 (£162.00), which is £189.50. Residents receiving Council Tax Benefit, Housing Benefit or the housing element of Universal Credit may get a 50% reduction, according to the same page.
Where it falls short for a whole-house clearance is in the exclusions and the handling rules. The council does not take black bag waste, DIY or building waste, garden waste, carpets or underlay, fitted kitchen or bathroom units, doors and windows, fencing or boilers. The crew cannot enter the property, so you have to carry every item outside to ground level, near vehicle access, by 7am on the collection day, and cover sofas and mattresses so they stay dry. Washing machines and other white goods must be disconnected and empty. If the items are not ready when the crew arrives, the collection is lost and you pay for a new booking.
For one old wardrobe and a mattress, that is a sensible route if you can carry them down yourself and wait. For a furnished house with items upstairs and a kitchen of small things, the cap of ten items per booking and the carry-out requirement are the limit. Our comparison of council bulky collection against a man and van works through the same trade-off using Brighton and Hove figures, and the guide to getting rid of old furniture covers the reuse options for single pieces.
The tip route: West Sussex recycling centres
A West Sussex recycling centre needs a booked slot and proof of residency, restricts some vehicles, and treats waste you did not carry yourself as commercial.
Mid Sussex District Council says the district has two recycling centres, both run by West Sussex County Council: Burgess Hill and East Grinstead. Burgess Hill is the nearer of the two for Haywards Heath. The council's page says you need an appointment to visit any West Sussex recycling centre and must show proof of residency in West Sussex.
The county's Burgess Hill Recycling Centre page gives the address as Fairbridge Way, Burgess Hill, RH15 8AR, and says you must book a slot before visiting. It lists vehicles that are not permitted: Luton type vans, horseboxes, twin axle trailers, trucks with tippers, flatbeds or drop-sides, and vehicles over 3.5 tonnes gross weight. Check that page for the current opening hours before you set out, as they change with the season.
The county's recycling centre terms and conditions add three rules that matter for a clearance. First, staff check your vehicle registration against your booking and will turn you away without your proof of residency and booking confirmation. If you arrive after your slot ends you must leave and re-book. Second, the centres accept up to 200kg of building, construction and demolition material per visit, described as roughly a small car boot load or eight 25kg rubble bags. Third, the terms state that the person producing the waste must deliver it or accompany whoever transports it, and that if they do not, it is classed as commercial waste.
That third rule has a practical consequence. If a trader collects your waste for a charge, they cannot then deposit it at a recycling centre as your household waste. This is why a carrier needs its own route for disposal, and why you should ask where your waste will go. The tip is a good route for a boot load of your own items, booked ahead. It is not a way to dispose of a whole house.
Checking who takes your waste
You have a legal duty to take reasonable steps that your waste goes to an authorised carrier, and the register check takes a minute.
Right Turn is a registered waste carrier, licence number CBDU621046. Do not take that on trust from any firm, ours included: search for it on the Environment Agency waste carriers register, which you can search by business name, registration number, address or postcode. The same gov.uk guidance on business and commercial waste tells people to check that a waste carrier is registered, and to report illegal carriers to Crimestoppers.
The householder side is set out in the government's guidance for local authorities on household waste duty of care fixed penalty notices, updated on 1 April 2024. It describes a fixed penalty for householders who did not take reasonable steps, with a default of £200 and a maximum full penalty of £600. It also lists what counts as acceptable evidence of checking: details of the business and vehicle, a record of the registration number, a receipt that includes the registered operator's business details, or a photograph of the carrier's waste licence. It adds that the absence of written records does not stop someone making the case that they met their duty.
In practice, keep three things: the registration number you checked, a receipt, and the waste record Right Turn provides on request. Our guide to choosing a licensed house clearance in Brighton goes through the same checks in more detail.
What to sort before the day
Decide what is kept, sold or donated before the quote visit, because anything left unmarked will be treated as part of the clearance.
You do not need to empty cupboards or pack boxes for a clearance, but a short sort saves surprises.
- Keep. Move or label anything staying, including papers, jewellery and anything with sentimental value. Check pockets, drawers and the backs of wardrobes.
- Sell or donate. Items with resale or charity value need a taker and a date. Agree with Lewis whether you will move them first or whether he should consider them for reuse where suitable.
- Clear. Everything else, including the loft, garage and shed if they are in scope.
- Not accepted. Right Turn cannot take hazardous or flammable materials, gas bottles, chemicals, asbestos, clinical or medical waste, or illegal items. Tell Lewis early if any are in the property, so they can be dealt with by a route that suits them.

Finally, make sure the property is accessible: keys, parking permits or visitor bays if the road needs one, and a note of any stairs, narrow doors or lift. If the property is a flat, mention the floor and whether there is a lift. Those details are what let a price be given without a visit. If you want to start with one question, send the photos and the postcode and ask what the job looks like from there.
How to compare your options
Compare routes on what is included, who carries, who checks the waste and what paperwork you get, not on the headline figure alone.
Each route suits a different job. The council route suits a few items you can carry out and a wait of up to ten working days. The tip route suits your own load in your own vehicle, booked ahead, within the vehicle and weight limits. A licensed clearance suits a furnished house, a tight deadline, or anyone who cannot do the lifting. Ask each firm the same questions: what is included in the price, whether the loft, garage and shed are in scope, where the waste goes, whether you will get a waste receipt, and what happens if the scope changes on the day. A quote that cannot answer those is hard to compare.
Right Turn's answers are on the house clearance page: the price is clear and agreed before booking, scope changes are explained and agreed before work continues, and the property is left swept. For the wider list of work, see the services page. A case study of a related job is on our probate house clearance in Hove page.
House clearance in Haywards Heath: FAQ
How do I get a quote for clearing a furnished home in Haywards Heath?
Send wide photos of each room, the postcode and any access notes to Lewis by WhatsApp, the contact form, phone or email. He reviews volume, access, parking and anything needing a specialist route, then gives a clear price before booking.
Can I use the Mid Sussex bulky waste collection for a whole house?
Usually not. Mid Sussex collects up to ten items per booking, costing £27.50 for the first and £18.00 for each of items two to ten, and it excludes black bags, DIY waste, carpets, fitted units and boilers. You must also carry items outside by 7am on the day.
Can I take a house clearance load to the tip myself?
You can take your own household waste to Burgess Hill Recycling Centre if you book a slot, show proof of West Sussex residency and use a permitted vehicle. West Sussex says waste not accompanied by its producer is classed as commercial.
How do I check a house clearance firm is a registered waste carrier?
Search the Environment Agency public register of waste carriers by business name, registration number or postcode. Right Turn's registration number is CBDU621046. Keep a receipt and ask for the waste record.
What happens to my belongings during a clearance?
Right Turn considers reuse and recycling where suitable, and the rest is taken away as waste. A waste receipt and the relevant waste record are available on request.
What cannot be included in a house clearance?
Right Turn cannot take hazardous or flammable materials, gas bottles, chemicals, asbestos, clinical or medical waste, illegal items, live animals or anything not agreed before the job.
