Removals in Lewes: cost, parking and moving day

What sets the price of a Lewes move, where the van can stop under East Sussex County Council rules, and a plan for moving day from booking week to the last box.

The sign says 9am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, and the van is booked for ten o'clock. In Lewes that small detail can decide how a removal goes, because many streets near the centre sit in controlled parking zones run by East Sussex County Council. This guide covers how a Lewes removal is priced, where the van can stop and what to arrange before the day.

It uses council, GOV.UK and Citizens Advice pages as read on 6 November 2026 and puts no figure on a move, because the price depends on what you take and how it has to travel. For a timeline of the fortnight before you go, see our moving house checklist, and for the service itself the home removals page.

What sets the price of a removal in Lewes

Volume, stairs, the carry from door to van, packing and parking set the price, which is why photos of what you are taking say more than a bedroom count.

Search for the cost of a Lewes removal and you meet comparison platforms, directories and price-guide pages. Their bands differ by hundreds of pounds, several are undated, and on one the Lewes average in the headline table did not match the average in its own FAQ. None that we opened said how its range was worked out, and none mentioned the parking rules that decide where a van can stand. They cannot see your move, so they cannot price it.

Two three-bedroom homes can be very different jobs. One has a hall on the ground floor and a van outside the door. The other has a loft full of boxes, a steep stair and a long walk to the kerb. Lewis reviews volume, access, parking and anything that needs a specialist route, then gives a clear price before booking. If the scope changes on the day he explains it and agrees any change before continuing.

  • Volume. Furniture, boxes, the loft, the shed and the garage all take van space. What you are not taking costs nothing to move.
  • Stairs and floors. An upper-floor flat, a narrow staircase or a wardrobe that will not turn on the landing adds carrying time at each end.
  • The carry. The distance from the front door to where the van can stand matters as much as the distance between the two homes.
  • Packing. Right Turn offers packing help. A home that is boxed and labelled moves faster than one where nothing is packed.
  • Big single items. Sofas, wardrobes and beds may need extra hands or taking apart. See our notes on sofa disposal and mattress disposal if one is not coming with you.
  • Parking. A permit street, a bay that needs suspending or a double-parked van changes how the day runs.

Ask any firm whether the quote includes VAT, because a business registered for VAT must add it. Ask Right Turn the same, and expect a straight answer before you book.

Moving day in Lewes, step by step

Work backwards from the day: the parking arrangements come first, because they have the longest lead time, and the packing last.

  1. Booking week: send photos and both postcodes. Wide shots of each room, the stairs and the front door at each end. Add any access notes such as steps, a long walk or a narrow lane. Lewis then gives a clear price before anything is booked.
  2. Two to three weeks out: sort and clear. Decide what is not coming. Anything you leave behind is volume you do not pay to move. For old furniture and rubbish, see getting rid of old furniture and rubbish removal in Lewes.
  3. As soon as the date is fixed: ask the council about the kerb. If the van needs a bay or the road is controlled, contact East Sussex County Council about a suspension. Its page gives no notice period, so do not leave it to the last week.
  4. One week out: pack and label. Label boxes by room at the new home, keep a bag of essentials with you and take pictures of any cables you unplug.
  5. The day before: clear the route. Free the hallway and stairs, empty and defrost the fridge freezer, and keep keys, passports and paperwork with you rather than in the van.
  6. Moving day: walk it through with Lewis. Show him what is going and what is staying, and the order you want rooms emptied. If anything about the job changes, he explains and agrees it before continuing.
  7. After the van: update the paperwork. Vehicle registration, driving licence, council tax and any parking permit, as set out below.

Where the van can stop in Lewes

East Sussex County Council runs the Lewes permit zones, and its listed controlled hours run Monday to Saturday at most, so check the signs on both streets.

Parking in Lewes is split into lettered zones. The council lists the hours for each on its zones, hours and waiting lists page. Zones B, C and D run 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday, zones A and G run 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, zone E runs 8am to 6pm Monday to Saturday, and zone F runs 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday from 1 September to 31 May. Some individual streets have longer hours, such as Little East Street, Albion Street and East Street in zone HS at 8am to 8pm. The council says parking charges and permit restrictions do not apply on public or bank holidays in Lewes, apart from the rule that nothing is needed on 25 December, 26 December and 1 January anywhere. These hours can change, so the sign on the street always wins.

If the van has to stand in a bay on moving day, the council can suspend it. Its dispensations and suspensions page says residents and businesses can apply, that all applications are considered individually and that charges apply. Moving house sits in the residential category, charged per 5.5 metre bay. The page says unauthorised vehicles parked in a suspended area are issued with a penalty charge notice, so a suspended bay is only useful if it is clear when the van arrives. The page does not name Lewes or give a notice period, so confirm both with the council's parking team.

A suspension cannot create space on a street with no bay. If the road is narrow or the carry is long, tell Lewis when you send photos, so the plan allows for the extra walking before the day rather than during it.

Permits and paperwork that follow you

A new address in a Lewes permit zone means updating your vehicle registration, and without it the council issues only a three-month permit.

The council's resident permits page says that if you move into a permit zone you must change the address on your vehicle registration document and give proof of your new address, such as a tenancy agreement or a solicitor's completion letter. Until then it issues only a three-month permit. The page also notes that residents in zone HS get a permit valid in two zones, and Lewes residents with a zone C permit can also use the South Street (South) car park. If you are moving between addresses inside the zones, the permit changes page lists a £5 administration fee for any change of address or vehicle.

Your driving licence needs the same care. GOV.UK says you must update your licence when you move and that you can be fined up to £1,000 if you do not tell DVLA when your address changes. Updating online is free, per the GOV.UK page on changing your licence address. Add council tax at both addresses, the electoral roll and your bank to the same list.

Clearing before you move

Hand unwanted items to a registered waste carrier, because the law puts the checking on you as the householder.

Most moves leave something behind: a wardrobe that will not fit the new hall, a shed of old paint, a garage no one has opened. GOV.UK says that if you give household waste to someone else, you must check they are allowed to take it, that you could be fined if you hand it to someone who is not legally allowed to, and that for a business collecting waste you must check it is on the Environment Agency register of waste carriers. See GOV.UK on getting rid of household waste for the rules, and select upper tier when you search. Right Turn is a registered waste carrier (CBDU621046), and you can check that on the register.

If the whole house is being emptied rather than moved, the right service is a house clearance, and our posts on house clearance in Lewes and clearing a parent's house cover that. For a mixed job that includes a few items to go, see our council bulky waste or a man and van comparison. Right Turn does not take hazardous or flammable materials, gas bottles, chemicals or asbestos, so keep those aside early.

Comparing quotes like for like

A fair comparison needs the same facts in every quote: what is included, the addresses, the access and what happens if the job changes.

When you have more than one quote, put them side by side with the same questions:

  • Which two addresses and which dates does it cover, and does it assume a van at the door?
  • Is packing, dismantling and rebuilding included, or extra?
  • Is VAT included?
  • What happens if more turns up on the day than the photos showed? Photos routinely undersell a job, so the answer matters.
  • Who does the work, and who do you speak to if something goes wrong?

The law is on your side if the service falls short. Section 49 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 says every contract to supply a service includes a term that the trader must perform it with reasonable care and skill. Citizens Advice says you can ask for the work to be redone or for a discount, and should usually give the trader the chance to put it right first. If you tell the trader the service was good enough at the end, you may lose that right, so raise any problem before the van leaves.

What to send Lewis for a clear price

Wide photos of each room, both postcodes and your access notes are enough for Lewis to review volume, stairs and parking and give a clear price.

  • A wide shot of every room, plus the loft, shed and garage if they are being emptied.
  • The stairs and front door at each address, and a photo from the door looking at where the van will stand.
  • Both postcodes and your preferred dates.
  • Anything awkward: a piano, a heavy sofa, a wardrobe that needs taking apart.
  • Whether you want packing help.

Send them by WhatsApp on 07399 916344, by phone on 01273 981001, by email to lewis@rightturnremovals.co.uk or through the contact page. Lewis reviews the move and gives a clear price before booking, and you can read more about Lewis and Right Turn.

Removals in Lewes: FAQ

How much do removals in Lewes cost?

It depends on volume, stairs, the carry to the van, packing and parking, so no honest single figure exists. Lewis gives a clear price from photos, agreed before booking. Send wide photos of each room, both postcodes and any access notes.

Who suspends a parking bay for a house move in Lewes?

East Sussex County Council runs the permit zones and takes applications for suspensions. Its page lists moving house as a residential suspension, charged per bay with a set-up fee and a daily rate. It gives no notice period, so contact the parking team early.

What happens if a car parks in a suspended bay?

The council says unauthorised vehicles parked in a suspended area are issued with a penalty charge notice. Check the bay is clear before the van arrives, and tell Lewis if it is not.

Do I need a new parking permit when I move within Lewes?

If you move into a permit zone, the council says to change the address on your vehicle registration document and give proof of your new address. Until then it issues only a three-month permit. Changes of address on an existing permit carry a £5 administration fee.

Must you update your driving licence when you move?

Yes. GOV.UK says you must update your licence when you move and can be fined up to £1,000 if you do not tell DVLA. Updating online is free.

Can Lewis clear unwanted items on the same job as a move?

Right Turn offers house clearance and rubbish clearance as well as removals, and is a registered waste carrier (CBDU621046). Mention what is not coming with you when you send photos so it can be included in the clear price. Hazardous materials, gas bottles, chemicals and asbestos cannot be taken.

What can I do if a removal goes wrong?

The Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires services to be performed with reasonable care and skill. Citizens Advice says you can ask for the work to be redone or for a discount, and should usually give the trader the chance to put it right first. Raise any problem before the crew leaves.
