What changes the quote House clearance

House clearance cost in Worthing: furniture and storage

What sets the price of clearing the furniture and stored contents of a Worthing home, four questions to ask in order, and the council, tip and charity rules that decide how far you can go without a carrier.

The awkward item in a Worthing house clearance is usually the sofa. GOV.UK guidance says waste upholstered seating that may contain persistent organic pollutants must be incinerated, not sent to landfill, so a sofa or armchair cannot be treated like a bookcase. That is the first reason a clearance quote needs to know what furniture is in the property, not just how many rooms. This guide covers furniture and stored contents: what the council, the tip, a charity and a carrier each deal with, and what decides the price.

It uses council, county and GOV.UK pages as read on 27 October 2026 and puts no figure on a clearance, because the price depends on what is in the property and how it has to come out. For the wider picture, see our house clearance cost guide for Brighton and Sussex, and for the next town along, house clearance cost in Shoreham and Lancing.

What sets the price of clearing furniture and storage in Worthing

Volume, access, parking, upholstered seating and how much is left to sort set the quote, so photos of what is in each space tell a carrier more than a room count.

Two three-bedroom homes in Worthing can need very different jobs. One has furniture grouped in rooms and an empty loft. The other has wardrobes full of clothes, boxes in the loft, a full garage and a shed. National cost guides publish bands by property size, but the ones we looked at give no source or date, and one contradicts itself between its summary box and its table, so none of them is a Worthing price. Lewis reviews volume, access, parking and anything that needs a specialist route before he gives a clear price, and if the scope changes on the day he explains it and agrees any change before continuing. Our house clearance service page sets out what a job covers.

  • Furniture volume. Wardrobes, beds, sofas, tables and shelving take van space and carrying time. Whether an item comes apart changes how it goes down the stairs.
  • Upholstered seating. Sofas, armchairs and padded chairs follow a narrower disposal route, covered below.
  • Stored contents. Boxes and bags in the loft, garage, shed and cupboards count by volume and by weight.
  • Access. Stairs, a flat above ground level, a narrow hall or a long carry to the van.
  • Parking. A van that can stand outside the door is quicker than one that has to carry items a long way.
  • What is left to sort. Items already marked as keep, sell or donate are quicker than a home where nothing has been decided.

Four questions to ask, in order, before you pay anyone

Ask whether anyone can reuse it, whether it fits the council's bands, whether you can take it to the tip yourself, and only then price a carrier.

  1. Can anyone else use it? The British Heart Foundation offers a free home collection of furniture and electrical items, but only for pieces it can resell: no obvious stains, rips or odours, all parts in place, and a fire safety label on anything upholstered. You book through an online form, and the page says your local store contacts you within five working days. Enter your postcode in the form to see whether it collects in your area. See the BHF collection page for its exclusions.
  2. Does it fit the council's bands, and can you wait? Adur and Worthing Councils charge £59 for up to three items of furniture or nine sacks, £90 for up to six items or 18 sacks and £145 for up to twelve items or 36 sacks, for 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027. It is for residential properties, there are no immediate collections and you can book up to six weeks ahead.
  3. Can you take it yourself? Worthing Recycling Centre needs a booked slot, proof of residency and a permitted vehicle, and the person who produced the waste must deliver it or travel with it.
  4. Is it more than that, or on a deadline? Then a registered carrier clears, carries and sweeps. Lewis prices it from photos and agrees a clear price before booking.

Most Worthing clearances end up mixing routes. A few good pieces go to a charity, a boot load goes to the tip and the rest, usually most of it, goes with a carrier. Each route trades money against effort and time, which is why the order matters. Our guide to getting rid of old furniture in Brighton and Hove covers the same routes for one or two pieces.

Sofas and armchairs: why upholstered seating is different

GOV.UK says waste upholstered domestic seating that contains POPs must be incinerated and must not go to landfill, which narrows where a sofa can go.

The GOV.UK guidance on waste upholstered domestic seating containing POPs lists sofas, armchairs, recliners, dining chairs, garden furniture, stools, futons, bean bags and cushions, and any seating with leather, synthetic leather, fabric or foam parts. Mattresses, beds, curtains and blinds are not covered. The guidance is aimed at waste handlers, not householders, and it sets no price. What it does is explain why a sofa is not just another heavy item: it has a narrower disposal route than a table or a wardrobe, so a quote works better when the sofas, armchairs and padded dining chairs are counted separately.

Two practical points follow. First, ask any carrier where upholstered seating goes, and keep the answer with your records. Second, if you hope to donate a sofa, look for the fire safety label before you book, because the BHF page says upholstered items without one are not accepted. Our guides to getting rid of a sofa in Brighton and Hove and mattress disposal in Brighton show how much the rules differ by item.

What the council's bands work out at per item

Filled to the limit, the council's three bands work out at about £19.67 then £15.00 then £12.08 an item but the price is for the band, so a part-filled band costs the same.

The arithmetic below uses only the Adur and Worthing Councils bulky waste page. It is not a quote and not what a carrier charges.

  • Category 1: £59 for up to three items, which is £19.67 an item if you fill it.
  • Category 2: £90 for up to six items, which is £15.00 an item if you fill it.
  • Category 3: £145 for up to twelve items, which is £12.08 an item if you fill it.
  • A part-filled band: four items fall into Category 2 at £90 and so cost £22.50 an item.

The rules around those sums matter as much as the numbers. Items must be left outside the property, easily accessible and clearly visible, and no sack may weigh more than 25kg. Worthing collections run on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, with no immediate collections. The council does not take asbestos, plasterboard, chemicals, garden waste, rubble or loose soil, and loads that do not fit the bands may need an assessment for a tailored quote. A furnished three-bedroom home with beds, wardrobes, a sofa, tables and a loft of boxes can pass twelve items quickly, which is where a carrier becomes the practical route. Our comparison of council bulky waste against a man and van shows the same trade-off for smaller jobs.

Loft, garage, shed and cupboards: counting what is stored

Stored contents are priced by volume and weight, so a loft of boxes can outweigh a bedroom of furniture, and some stored items need a specialist route.

Stored items are where a clearance most often turns out bigger than expected. The council counts sacks at up to 25kg each, and heavy boxes of books or tools add weight that furniture does not. Right Turn cannot take hazardous or flammable materials, gas bottles, chemicals, asbestos, clinical or medical waste, illegal items, live animals or anything not agreed before the job. In practice that means garage paint, solvents and gas canisters need their own route, and it helps to tell Lewis about them before the day. The checklist below is the one to walk round before taking photos.

  • Loft. Boxes, bags, suitcases and loft boards, plus the hatch, ladder and light, because they decide how fast things come down.
  • Garage. Shelving, bikes, tools and old furniture, with paint, solvents and gas bottles set apart.
  • Shed. Garden furniture, tools and pots, and how far the shed is from the van.
  • Cupboards and wardrobes. Bedding, clothes and small appliances. Sorting these into keep, donate and clear before the day saves the most time.

Worthing Recycling Centre: booking, vehicles and who must deliver

You must book a slot, show proof of West Sussex residency and deliver the waste yourself or travel with it, and Luton vans and twin axle trailers are not allowed.

The West Sussex page for Worthing Recycling Centre gives the address as Hambridge Trading Estate, Willowbrook Road, BN14 8NA. From 1 October to 31 March it is open from 9am to 4pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and closed on Thursday. From 1 April to 30 September it is open until 6pm. Booking is required for vehicles, though not for people on foot, on a bicycle or on a mobility scooter. The page says you cannot visit with a Luton type van, a horsebox, a twin axle trailer (four wheels), a truck with a tipper, flatbed or drop-sides, or a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes gross. It also states a height rule, so read it before you go.

At the gate you show one document from the West Sussex proof of residency list: a driving licence, a council tax bill for the current financial year, a utility bill from the last year, a TV licence from the last year, an HMRC or Home Office letter from the last year, a current bus pass or a current disabled parking permit. Staff look only at the address.

The recycling centre terms and conditions add the rule that matters for a clearance. The person producing the waste must deliver it, or accompany whoever carries it. If they do not, the waste is classed as commercial, and the terms say it is against the law to deposit commercial waste at a Recycling Centre. Paying someone to take your furniture to the tip is therefore not a route. We did not check which items the centre accepts or any charges, and the page tells you to check its A to Z guide first.

What a clearance quote should itemise

A usable quote names what is being cleared, how it is counted, the access and parking it assumes, whether VAT is included and what is excluded.

  • Furniture by type and quantity, with sofas, armchairs and padded chairs counted separately.
  • Stored contents by space: loft, garage, shed and cupboards.
  • Access assumptions: stairs, floor level and where the van will park.
  • Exclusions: the list of things the carrier cannot take, so there are no surprises on the day.
  • Waste records: Right Turn gives a waste receipt and relevant waste record on request.
  • The finish: Lewis leaves the property swept.
  • Changes: if the scope changes on the day, the carrier should explain it and agree any change before continuing.

VAT is the other thing to settle. GOV.UK lists the standard rate of VAT as 20%, but a business only charges it if it is VAT registered, and the registration threshold is £90,000 of taxable turnover. Ask every firm whether its quote includes VAT, so you compare like with like. Our guide to what a licensed house clearance means in Brighton covers the other questions worth asking.

Check the carrier before anything leaves

Check the carrier on the Environment Agency register before anything leaves, because a householder who took no reasonable steps can face a default penalty of £200.

GOV.UK says to check that a business collecting your waste is on the register of waste carriers, selecting upper tier when you search. The Environment Agency register lets you search by business name, registration number, address or postcode. Right Turn is a registered waste carrier, licence CBDU621046, and you can check that number there. The GOV.UK fixed penalty guidance sets a default of £200 and a full penalty range of £150 to £600 for a householder who did not take reasonable measures. It lists the evidence that helps: business and vehicle details, a record of the registration number, a receipt and a photo of the carrier's licence. Our probate house clearance checklist shows how executors keep that record.

What to send for a price

Send wide photos of every room, the loft, garage and shed, close shots of sofas and armchairs, and the route out, with the postcode.

  • One wide photo of each room, taken from the doorway.
  • The loft, garage, shed and any full cupboards.
  • Sofas and armchairs, including any label visible on them.
  • The stairs, hallway and front door, and where a van could park.
  • Notes on what you are keeping, selling or donating, and anything on the cannot-take list above.

Lewis reviews the photos and gives a clear price before anything is booked. Send them by WhatsApp, the contact page, phone or email. If you are also moving, our home removals service and the moving house checklist for Brighton and Hove cover the move side, and the services page lists everything Right Turn does.
